A lively day of rain and heavy showers, dying out this afternoon, with winds strong and gusty from the southwest.
There were plenty of birds to be seen around the Island today, despite the conditions. Off Corbiere through the morning were a juvenile Sabine's Gull moving west, 258 Manx Shearwaters, 163 Balearic Shearwaters, a Fulmar, 48 Gannets, 26 Sandwich Terns, a commic tern sp, a Guillemot, 14 Mediterranean Gulls, a Kittiwake, 24 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Curlews and on the headland again, a Wheatear. At Petit Port were 21 Curlews, a first winter Yellow-legged Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 7 Great Black-backed Gulls and a Marsh Harrier.
A Glossy Ibis flew in off the sea at Le Hurel this afternoon. Other birds seen in Grouville Bay included 700 Sandwich Terns, 500+ Black-headed Gulls, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 61 Ringed Plovers, 9 Grey Plovers, 56 Turnstones, 3 Redshanks, 5 Greenshanks, 22 Sanderlings, 16 Dunlin and a Wheatear. At La Sente were 12 Little Egrets, 8 Grey Herons and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. At Grouville Marsh were 19 Cattle Egrets, 2 Little Egrets, 40 House Martins, 20 Swallows and a Grey Heron.
On St Ouen's Pond Scrape was a Black-tailed Godwit and at Le Pulec was a Common Sandpiper. 4 Wheatears were seen at the Cutty Sark and at St Aubin were 145 Sandwich Terns and 16 Redshanks.
Elsewhere, 30 Swallows were at La Blinerie, a Grey Heron was at Grans Vaux and the family of Firecrest were still in a Garden at Vallee des Vaux.
Evening update: In Grouville Bay this evening were c1000 Sandwich Terns, 8 Common Terns, 13 Grey Plovers, 165 Turnstones, 5 Greenshanks, 2 Redshanks, 15 Mediterranean Gulls, 600+ Black-headed Gulls, 18 Little Egrets, 45 Ringed Plovers and 26 Curlews.
Extras for yesterday were 2 Dunlin and 15 Ringed Plovers at La Saline in St Ouen's Bay and 4 Snipe plus a Greenshank at St Ouen's Pond.
