The wind was very much back in the West today, with a period of light rain as a cold front passed through the Island, leading to a fair to fine afternoon
It was generally a quiet day today, given the time of year. Seen passing Corbiere in three hours were a Common Scoter, 2 Manx Shearwaters, 7 Balearic Shearwaters, 26 Gannets, 81 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Terns, 70 Black-headed Gulls, 31 Mediterranean Gulls, 63 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 265 Herring Gulls, 26 Curlews heading off to roost on the high tide, 9 Cormorants, 34 Shags, 48 Great Black-backed Gulls and a White Wagtail. In Petit Port Bay were c80 Mediterranean Gulls - a high proportion of them juveniles, 50 Black-headed Gulls, a Common Gull, a Yellow-legged Gull and 45 Sandwich Terns. At Hydrangea Avenue in St Ouen was a Honey Buzzard.
On the Scrape, which is rapidly drying up again ( but rain forecast for the next three days), were 2 Ruff, a Common Sandpiper, a Redshank, a Snipe, and a Teal, with 2 Wheatears in the field nearby. At La Tour Carree were 29 Ringed Plovers and 3 Dunlin.
In Grouville Marsh from Dawn until rain stopped play, were 12 Blackcaps, 2 Willow Warblers, a Yellow Wagtail, 10 Chiffchaffs, 5 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Bullfinches, 2 Little Egrets, 19 House Martins and 2 Marsh Harriers, also 2 Cattle Egrets were in the field opposite Grouville Parish Hall.
2 Yellow Wagtails were seen at Noirmont during a brief visit, while over St Brelade's Bay were 20 Ravens and 7 Buzzards including a pale-phased bird and at St Aubin were 200 Black-headed Gulls.
In a garden at Vallee des Vaux were 2 Firecrests, 8 Blackcaps, 2 Bullfinches and in a nearby stream was a Water Rail.
At Grosnez there was a
Golden Plover and in St Ouen's Bay this afternoon were 6
Yellow-legged Gulls, 234 Lesser Black-backed Gulls,
123 Great
Black-backed Gulls, 51
Mediterranean Gulls, 125
Black-headed Gulls and a
Common Gull. 33
Curlews were in flight together there too, heading towards Corbiere/Petit Port. On Beauport Common this evening were a
Whinchat, 2
Stonechats and 2
Dartford Warblers.
